- The earnings report will add the figures investors do not yet have, including membership fees, total revenue, expenses, profit, and earnings per share (EPS).
Costco Wholesale Corp (NASDAQ: COST) operates membership-based warehouse clubs. Its 16-week fiscal fourth quarter ended on August 30. On September 2, the company published an early sales update showing $93.9 billion in net sales, compared with $84.4 billion in the same period last year. That update gave investors a view of customer spending before the full financial results were ready.
The early sales figure is not Costco’s total quarterly revenue. Total revenue also includes membership fees. For example, in last year’s fourth quarter, Costco reported $84.432 billion in net sales and $1.724 billion in membership fees, for $86.156 billion in total revenue. The September 24 report will show the corresponding breakdown for this year, along with Costco’s costs and profit.
Costco’s sales update also reported 9.4% growth in comparable sales, a measure of performance at established warehouses and online operations. Excluding the effects of changes in gasoline prices and foreign exchange rates, comparable sales grew 6.7%. That distinction helps readers see how much of the reported increase came from factors beyond underlying sales activity.
Analysts surveyed by Benzinga Pro expect $6.53 in EPS, up from $5.87 a year earlier. With net sales already disclosed, the main question for the earnings release is how Costco’s sales growth, membership fees, and costs translated into profit.
